My direct mail story goes all the way back to 2003 at FNBO, where I used mail campaigns to help grow product usage by as much as 100%. Since then, I've worked as a new customer acquiring consultant to clients in the payment industry including Discover, Visa, Wells Fargo, Intuit, MasterCard, Chase Bank, FIS, Fiserv, TSYS and many others.
But the day direct mail got really real for me was when I spent almost $5000 of my own money to send postcards when I launched HuskerPay in 2016.

And let me tell you, spending someone else's marketing budget is one thing. Spending your own money? That changes everything. Fast.
It forced me to care about what actually works, not what just looks good on paper.
And no, every campaign wasn't a home run. I've mailed pieces that flopped, scratched my head, learned the lesson, and came back better the next time. That's part of what gives me confidence today. I didn't learn direct mail from theory alone. I learned it by using it, testing it, paying for it, and seeing what happens in the real world.
I also don't believe direct mail is some magic bullet. It's not. It works best when it's part of a smart marketing system — alongside your website, Google presence, Youtube and social media, follow-up offers, reviews, and everything else that helps a business grow.
